The December SJCC Closes Today, Houston Went From 5 Full Events to 17, and Winter Still Has Room

Regular registration for the December SJCC in Milwaukee (Dec 4–6) closes today, October 7. 1,375 fencers have entered, up from 923 a week ago. USA Fencing hasn't published caps for it, so we can't tell you how close any one field is to full. The October NAC in Orlando starts Friday, and its late registration ends tomorrow, October 8. The November NAC is in late registration until November 19. Both are at USA Fencing's late fee of about four times the normal entry.
Across the country we are tracking 45 upcoming tournaments with 353 events at 80% capacity or higher, and 221 of those events are full. That is down from 233 last week, but not because fields opened up. Austin RYC & RJCC (24 full events) and Ben Gutenberg (11) have now been fenced, and Morris Cup in Suffern, NY raised its caps in seven fields. The fastest-filling tournament this week was Battle in Space City ROC/RJCC in Houston: 5 full events a week ago, 17 today, including five of its six Division IA events.
The room is in winter. Capitol Clash, Elite Cup, Chamley-Watson and Rafanelli all grew this week and still have space in most fields. Wildcat SYC/RCC near Chicago opened since our last report, and five more Junior Olympic qualifiers went up on AskFRED.

Nashville raised its Junior Men's Saber cap from 14 to 28, so it has no full events this week; Junior Men's Epee is at 47 of 49.

Houston is this week's lesson. Battle in Space City had 5 full events when its regular deadline was five days away, and 17 full events two days after it passed. The fencers who waited for the deadline are now choosing between a wait-list and USA Fencing's late fee. The same thing is lined up for November: Pizza (closes Oct 23), BBFC in Las Vegas (now closes Oct 24) and Cobra (Nov 1) are already losing youth fields every week. For the December SJCC, today is the day. And for winter, Capitol Clash, Elite Cup, Chamley-Watson, Wildcat, Motor City, Rafanelli and American Challenge all have room right now. Register the week a tournament opens, not the week it closes.
