Region 5 Tournament Watch: Battle in Space City Went From 5 Full Events to 17, and Austin Challenge Already Has 19 Full Events

Region 5 has 3 tournaments with 51 events at 80% or higher, and 38 of them full. That is fewer than last week's 47 because Austin RYC & RJCC (24 full events) has now been fenced. The story of the week is Battle in Space City ROC/RJCC in Houston (Oct 17–18). A week ago it had 5 full events. Today it has 17, including five of its six Division IA events, and its regular deadline passed on October 5.
Austin Challenge SYC & RCC in Round Rock (Dec 18–20) added two more full events, for 19, with almost two months still to go before its December 1 deadline.

Division IA Men's Epee (48 of 49), Cadet Women's Saber (19 of 20) and Division II Women's Saber (20 of 21) have 1 spot each; Junior Men's Foil, Cadet Men's Foil and Junior Women's Foil have 2.
On the national side, the December SJCC in Milwaukee (Dec 4–6) closes today, October 7, and the October and November NACs are in late registration until October 8 and November 19, at USA Fencing's late fee.

Houston is the lesson of the week for every region. Battle in Space City had 5 full events five days before its regular deadline and 17 two days after it. Anyone who planned to register at the deadline is now looking at USA Fencing's late fee or a wait-list. Austin Challenge is on the same track for December, and its Cadet Men's Epee is two spots from full. If your fencer is going, register now. Crescent City in New Orleans is open for November, and the spring Texas regionals are announced: watch for their opening dates.
